Einspänner (Viennese Coffee with Whipped Cream)

Einspänner (Viennese Coffee with Whipped Cream)

Originating from Vienna, the Einspänner is a classic coffee beverage. It consists of strong black coffee topped with a generous layer of sweetened whipped cream and a dusting of cocoa powder. It's traditionally served in a glass, contrasting the hot coffee and the cool cream.

This Viennese favorite was historically enjoyed by horse-drawn carriage drivers (called Einspänner in German), who needed a coffee that could stay warm under a layer of cream while they worked. It's a sophisticated yet simple delight you can easily make at home today.

Ingredients:

Instructions:

  • 1 cup of strong black coffee or double shots of espresso
  • Whipped cream
  • -cocoa powder
  • Home-made whipped cream
    • 1/2 cup heavy cream
    • 1 tablespoon powdered sugar
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, optional
  • -Ice cubes (optional)

  1. Brew the strong black coffee or espresso and pour it into a heat-resistant glass.
  2. Add the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract in a separate bowl. Use an electric whisk to beat until soft peaks form
  3. For an iced version, add ice cubes to the coffee.
  4. Gently spoon the whipped cream over the hot or iced coffee, creating a thick layer on top.
  5.  Dust with cocoa powder on top

Serve immediately without stirring, allowing the cream to meld with the coffee as you sip gradually.

You can also sweeten your coffee before adding the cream for an extra touch of indulgence. Try it hot or iced!
