At Solai Coffee, we believe that a great cup of coffee is rooted in people, purpose, and the stories behind every bean. We are committed to full traceability and direct relationships with the farmers who grow our coffee, ensuring that every step of the journey honors both quality and community.

That is why we are proud to share this guest post from Matt Berry, co-owner of Ember Coffee Co.—a purpose-driven café and roastery in Big Lake, Minnesota. Like us, Matt believes in building meaningful connections through coffee.

In this piece, Matt explores what it truly means to run a values-based coffee business—from ethical sourcing and people-first leadership to nurturing community and staying mission-focused while growing. His reflections echo the principles we stand for at Solai Coffee. Whether you are a café owner, a passionate coffee drinker, or someone who believes in the power of purpose, this article will resonate deeply.

Why Purpose-Driven Cafes Win Loyalty

inside Ember purpose-driven café

Step inside a purpose-driven café, and you can feel something different humming beneath the surface. Before the aroma of air-roasted beans or the delicate foam atop your latte reaches you, the warmth is already there. Maybe it's the way the barista remembers your name, or a stranger's nod at the community table—whatever it is, it goes beyond the cup. Around here, we say, "We don't serve coffee; we serve people." That philosophy shapes everything, filling every corner with sincerity and spirit.

Purpose-driven cafés are changing more than menus and pricing sheets. They're redefining the coffee ritual as a daily act of care and connection—a grounding moment in a fast-moving world. It's not always an easy path. Blending integrity with profitability demands grit, transparency, and no small amount of soul-searching. Yet for those who take up the challenge, the rewards ripple far beyond the bottom line: customer loyalty deepens, teams grow resilient, and communities find places to gather and belong.

If you're building a café with purpose, let us walk the journey with you. From sustainable beans to sourcing guidance, Solai Coffee is here to support your mission.

Coffee Lovers Care About Purpose

Over the years, the definition of good coffee has evolved. Today's guests crave not only craft and quality, but also shared values—from local coffee beans to transparent sourcing

According to the IBM Institute for Business Value72% of consumers prefer brands that align with their beliefs, even when it comes at a premium—a trend particularly led by Gen Z and millennial coffee consumers. For cafés It calls for kindness at every step, from ethical sourcing and sustainability to a spirit of welcome.

At Ember Coffee Co., we learned early on what it means to have coffee shape our lives. In the blur of raising young children, date nights at The Strip Club Meat & Fish were rare escapes—places where we didn't just eat, we felt celebrated. That little bubble of care and joy, of being seen, became a compass for Ember. We wanted to create a café where every guest, staff member, and neighbor felt that same sense of welcome and belonging.

This gentle shift in how people choose where to gather isn't a passing trend. The "mindful consumer"—from Gen Z to grandparents—thirsts for meaning. Loyalty is earned through authenticity, not novelty. Our values show up in everyday actions: fair-wage sourcing, inclusive hiring, and genuine community engagement. We stay rooted in our promise—serving people, not just coffee.

Authenticity Builds Trust

When we first opened our café and roastery, we wanted it to be more than just a place to grab coffee. Our dream was to create a space where every cup told a story—where you could feel the care and intention behind every detail. Authenticity has been at the heart of everything we do, and it's what turns casual customers into loyal regulars.

Let me tell you how we've made it work—and share a few tips for bringing authenticity into your own space.

  • Ethical Sourcing Matters

We knew from the start that we didn't want just to sell coffee; we wanted to honor the craft and the people behind it. That's why we partner with coffee growers who share our commitment to sustainability and fair practices. We're proud to be a small-batch coffee roaster, working with family-run co-ops and farms dedicated to their land and communities. We know every bean we roast comes with a story worth sharing.

Whether you're running a café or any kind of small business, think about what values matter most to you, and align your choices with them. Guests notice when your actions match your mission.

  • Sustainability Goes a Long Way

We're not perfect, but we do our best to make thoughtful choices where we can. From compostable cups to energy-efficient roasting, we aim to minimize our footprint. My advice? Don't try to do it all—focus on a few sustainable practices that resonate with your mission and customers. Then, celebrate those choices. Whether it's switching to reusable straws or sourcing locally, small changes show you care.

  • Build Community Through Local Partnerships

One of our favorite parts of running this café is connecting with our neighbors. Our pastries are made in-house by a dear friend who's lived in this area forever, and the honey in your latte is from a Minnesota local, and our sandwich bread comes from a bread company owned and operated by a beautiful family in the area.

These partnerships not only support other small businesses but add a sense of community to every bite and sip. If you're looking to stand out, start by collaborating with people nearby—it creates a special connection that customers can feel.

A café isn't just about the coffee—it's about the people, stories, and details that make it feel like home. That's what we aim to deliver with every cup we serve.

At the end of the day, authenticity is about staying true to your values and putting care into everything you do. It's what makes guests feel good about spending time (and money) with you, and it's what makes your team proud to show up every day.

People-First Leadership

Coffee shops often face the challenge of high staff turnover, a reality that can disrupt operations and negatively impact customer experiences. But we've discovered that purpose changes everything. When our team feels valued, supported, and invested in, their work becomes more than just a job—it becomes something meaningful and fulfilling. This shift in mindset not only benefits our baristas but also transforms the customer experience.

  • Have Your Staff Memorize Your (Shared) Mission

At our café, we believe in creating a strong sense of purpose from the very beginning. Every barista memorizes our mission statement within their first 30 days. Why do we prioritize this? Because we want to connect each team member to a bigger purpose. We want them to see themselves as more than employees clocking in and out. They're part of a team that strives to make a difference every day, whether it's through crafting the perfect latte or simply brightening someone's day.  When our mission is internalized, it empowers every individual to serve with intention and be part of a purpose-driven community.

  • Apply Constant Coaching on Soft Skills

We actively invest in our team's growth, particularly in soft skills. While technical skills like pulling espresso shots or steaming milk are essential, we know that customer connection is what truly sets us apart. That's why we've developed a "red carpet" service training program, designed to teach our staff how to create exceptional customer experiences.

This training goes beyond the basics. From the way they greet customers with a warm smile to the thoughtful way they hand over a perfectly crafted cup of coffee, every detail matters. We emphasize the importance of empathy, active listening, and personalized interactions. Our coaching is ongoing—through role-playing, feedback sessions, and support, we help our team build confidence and refine their ability to connect with customers on a human level.

The results speak for themselves. By fostering this people-first culture, our baristas consistently deliver unforgettable experiences. A genuine smile, a kind question, or even remembering a regular's favorite order—all these small actions add up to create a welcoming environment that keeps customers coming back.

Purpose Shapes Guest Loyalty

Our baristas greet each guest with a genuine smile, not because it's part of the job, but because they genuinely care about the people who walk through our doors. Over time, we've learned that a café is a place where relationships are built, stories are shared, and meaningful moments happen. That's why every inch of our space reflects our deeper mission—whether it's through décor that tells a story, locally sourced ingredients that support our community, or the little acts of kindness that brighten someone's day.

What we've discovered is that when you create with purpose, it becomes contagious. Our team feels it every day—this shared sense of belonging and commitment to something bigger than ourselves. And it doesn't stop there. That purpose resonates with our guests, too, sparking a feeling that they're not just customers but part of something special. For us, we have created a space where people feel seen, valued, and inspired.

  • Shared values, stronger bonds

Every choice we make, from the cups we use to the stories we tell, reflects who we are as a café—and as people. Maybe your shop prioritizes environmental sustainability, using recycled materials, sourcing locally, and rewarding guests who bring reusable cups. Or perhaps it's a space that opens doors for inclusivity, providing opportunities to those who need them most. These decisions matter, and guests notice and a genuine connection is formed, creating loyalty that goes far beyond a single cup of coffee.

We believe that investing in people is the most powerful thing we can do. Every person who works here is part of the family. Through mentorship, guidance, and ongoing support, we help our team grow, not just in their skills but in their confidence and purpose. Most of this is driven by the heart and incredible vision of my wife and co-owner, Elisa. Her passion for people shines in everything we do. She leads with kindness, empathy, and an unwavering belief in the potential of those around her.

Challenges to Navigating Growth with Purpose

Staying true to your mission becomes more complex as your café begins to grow. Expansion brings exciting opportunities, but it can also test your core values. The unique charm, close-knit customer connections, and sustainable practices that once defined your space may feel harder to maintain at scale.

The key is finding intentional ways to grow without losing the heart of what makes your business special. That means protecting your values while adapting to new demands—from operations to staffing and beyond.

One essential piece is transparency. Today's customers want to support businesses that genuinely align with their values, and they expect to see real impact, not just promises.

Equally important is finding financial stability. A mission-driven business is powerful, but purpose alone does not guarantee sustainability. Balancing your ideals with a strong, adaptable business model ensures you can continue your work long-term without compromising what matters most.

These challenges require clarity, consistency, and courage. But by staying grounded in your purpose while making thoughtful, values-aligned decisions, your café can grow in a way that not only sustains—it inspires.

Final Thoughts: What's Your Why?

Simon Sinek's timeless question, "What's your why?", is just as relevant for café owners and baristas as it is for everyone. Your coffee shop is more than a place to serve drinks—it is an expression of your values, your purpose, and the story you want to share with your community.

So, what's at the core of your café? Take a moment to define your "why." Is it about creating a welcoming space for connection? Supporting local farmers? Sharing your love for craft coffee? Whatever it is, let it guide every decision you make, from the beans you choose to the atmosphere you cultivate.

How is your team living that purpose? Your baristas and staff are the heartbeat of your café. Create space for their growth, listen to their ideas, and make them feel part of the bigger mission.

Finally, are you serving more than just coffee? A great café leaves a mark—on hearts, on habits, and on the community it serves. Use your space and your story to go beyond the cup and create something truly meaningful.
